Latin American Minerals is a Toronto-based mining company, focused on the operation, development, exploration and acquisition of precious metal projects. The Company is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX- V: LAT).

Why Paraguay

A land-locked country located between Argentina and Brazil, Paraguay has historically focused onParaguayanFlag agriculture, cattle production an industrial processing of food and timber.  As a result, the mineral wealth of the country has been largely unexplored and untouched.  However, with a geological structure that has been related to break-up of the Pangean supercontinent, the mineralization of the country reveals characteristics similar to South Africa and Namibia, two areas rich in mineral wealth.  Mineral deposits indicated in the country include gold, diamonds, rare-earth oxides, uranium, niobium, titanium, iron and bauxite

Exploration History:

Paraguay is an ideal mining jurisdiction boasting a strong centralized government with unified national mining laws, a net mining royalty, and moderate tariffs and income tax.  The Constitution of 1992 established Paraguay as a Republic based on the representative, democratic and participative forms of government.  Recent governments have all expressed a willingness to work with foreign companies to advance Paraguay’s resource sector.

Paraguay has vast mineral resource potential.  In 1859, Paraguay had one of the first recorded iron extraction and smelting facilities in South America. A 1959 United States Geological Survey examined the mineral potential of the country, and in 1979 Anschutz Corporation began a four year program exploring a 65,000 kmarea. In the 1990’s Yamana Gold began examining targets previously identified by Anschutz, eventually forming a joint venture with Newmont.

More recently, new exploration companies have begun exploration in Paraguay, thanks in part to favorable mining laws and in part to the rich potential of the country’s mineralization. Recent projects include titanium and uranium exploration.  As one of the first exploration companies to operate in Paraguay, Latin American Minerals has enjoyed the opportunity to select large, highly promising mineral prospects.

Regional Geology:

Straddling the Brazilian Shield and the Andean Orogene, Paraguay is divided into two distinct geologic blocks.  While western Paraguay (Chaco) is composed of a basin filled with sediments, eastern Paraguay displays extensive mineral potential.

Paraguay is composed of several cratonic blocks that range in age from 3.8 Ga through to 2.7 Ga.  These cratons are responsible for the formation of greenstone belts, granite gneisses and granulites, schists and quartzites. The younger basement is formed by 950-550 million year old rocks composed of low-medium grade metasediments, limestones and acidic rock forms. Basins between the cratons are filled with lower Paleozoic to Mesozoic continental sediments. Mesozoic-to-tertiary alkali and theoletic mafic lavas, related to the break-up of the Pangean supercontinent, extend across the country in NW rifts cutting across both basins and cratons.

Exploration Potential:

Paraguayan exploration potential has historically been untested to any major degree, however gold, iron, copper, manganese, uranium, tin lead barium, and silver occurrences have been known in the country for many years. Paraguay hosts favorable geology for:

  • Gold in Mesozoic intrusives and other host units,
  • Greenstone Belt gold in the Precambrian shield,
  • Diamonds and uranium in the Permian sedimentary basin,
  • Niobium, rare earths in carbonatite intrusive complexes, and
  • Laterite and bauxite deposits.
